Student visa work hours calculator

Enter the hours you worked each week, adding up every job. The calculator checks every fortnight that starts on a Monday — the definition used for visa condition 8105 — and shows whether any of them goes over 48 hours.

How the calculator checks your hours

  • A fortnight is any 14-day period that starts on a Monday, so every fortnight is exactly two Monday-to-Sunday weeks.
  • A new fortnight starts every Monday, so the fortnights overlap: weeks 1+2, weeks 2+3, weeks 3+4. Each one must be 48 hours or less.
  • Add up the hours from all your employers, agencies and casual jobs. During scheduled course breaks the limit does not apply.

Using the calculator: common questions

How many hours can I work next week without going over?

Enter the hours you have already worked in the previous weeks and the calculator shows the maximum you can add next week without any fortnight going over 48 hours. Because next week pairs with the week just before it, a heavy week leaves you less room in the week that follows.

Do I enter my hours per week or per fortnight?

Per week, Monday to Sunday — one box per week. The calculator builds the fortnights for you by pairing each week with the next one, which is exactly the part that goes wrong when you do it by hand.

How many weeks should I enter?

Two is the minimum needed to check a single fortnight. Four weeks is the best starting point because it shows three overlapping fortnights at once. You can add up to twelve weeks if you want to check a whole term.

The calculator says one of my fortnights is over 48 hours — what should I do?

First check the numbers against your payslips or rosters, because one mistyped week changes two fortnights. If the hours are right, the 48-hour rule guide explains what breaching condition 8105 means and what to do next — and for anything about your own visa, speak with a registered migration agent.

Does the calculator store my hours?

No. There is no sign-up and the hours you type are never sent to a server: they stay in the page and disappear when you close or reload it. If you want your hours saved and checked automatically as you work, that is what the ShiftSafe app does.
